Joan's Bio: In 1988, I
joined an obedience club with my young lab. My goal was to have a well
mannered pet. Soon, I became an active member of the club, serving two
terms as president, then board member and showing 3 dogs to their UD’s.
In 1990, several club members got together and built some agility
equipment. At the time, no one knew anything about training agility
obstacles and certainly nothing about handling.
My young dog at the time, a GSD named
Dancer, was very talented so I wanted to learn as much as I could about
this new sport. I traveled to seminars and read every book I could find.
Dancer and I loved training and showing. Her 2 most memorable moments
were taking first place in rounds 1 and 2 in the 24” division at the
1996 AKC Nationals and then placing 2nd overall at the 1997 AKC
Nationals.
Unfortunately, Dancer had to be retired
due to an injury that spring. In order to stay active in the sport I
loved, I became an AKC agility judge in March 1998.
In my search for my next top level
competition dog, I researched many breeds and decided on a Belgian
Malinois. I brought home my first Malinois in 1997. I was amazed at how
smart and athletic they were. Before then, I had owned and trained 4
different breeds. I currently own 3 Malinois and know I have found “my
breed”. My current competition dog is still competitive in the 20”
Excellent B class. We show much less than we used to. After all, he will
be 10 years old this spring! My new agility hopefully is a young dog
from ABMC rescue. She is a joy and we are having a great time learning
our foundations skills for agility.
